How Music Helps

Updated: May 2, 2022

During the COVID-19 pandemic when we are all separated, we have an opportunity to unite through music. Music naturally helps to alleviate pain and suffering; it facilitates healing, recovery, and relaxation. During public crises, people turn to music to help them cope with heavy, disheartening circumstances. To name a few instances...

- Thousands of Parisians sang hymns as they watched the Notre Dame Cathedral engulfed in flames just last year (April 15, 2019).

- English concert pianist Myra Hess gave lunchtime concerts in London to maintain the city's morale during World War II.

- Music helped people heal after 9/11, and there are many songs written about this tragic historical event.

- The song "We Are the World" was composed in 1985 for famine relief in Africa, and it was re-recorded after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, uniting various artists in a joint effort to raise funds and awareness for earthquake relief.

Music also aids individuals with personal hardships. Whatever the situation may be, whatever the emotions we are feeling, music will always be there for us. It provides comfort, allows us to regain some control over our lives, and gives us strength and hope.

In addition to supporting those who are most directly impacted by COVID-19, this organization's efforts can encourage people to perform/compose/learn new songs for their own enjoyment, growth, and dedication to music.
